You Are Invited...To the Humane Society of Wilkes picnic. It will be held on Sunday, July 21 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. The location is the picnic shelter at Wilkes County Park. To get there, take 421 west toward Boone. Go approximately 5 miles past Wal-Mart (when you see Holbrook’s Motel you are getting close). Look for an Amoco station on your left, and then turn left on Recreation Road South; it is marked with a sign that says Wilkes Park & Recreation. Follow Recreation Road South through a residential area about 2 miles to the lake. We will be at the second shelter, closest to the lake.. Everyone is invited – come and bring a friend. Food, drinks, etc. will be provided. Join us for an afternoon of fun, food, and fellowship. Well-behaved dogs are also welcome! Puppies, Puppies, PuppiesThe adoption committee has 5 adorable black Lab mix puppies in foster care that are available for adoption. The litter of 7 puppies was brought into the Wilkes County animal shelter when they were 4 weeks old. All of them have been examined by a veterinarian and treated for worms. Now 6 weeks old, they are healthy, sweet and playful. Two have been adopted, and the other five are eagerly waiting a home of their own. For more information contact Arlene and Blair at adoption@ humansocietyofwilkes.org. You can also see the puppies on our web site at www. humanesocietyofwilkes.org. Adoption UpdateWe had one of our best adoption fairs at Belk in May. Eleven animals were adopted. The team of volunteers started early in the morning washing dogs and puppies, and picking out kittens to be brought to the fair. At the same time, volunteers were setting up the tent and getting pens ready for the animals. A constant flow of people visited that day. Volunteers were kept busy helping people decide on pets, and handing out animal care information. The weather was perfect, and everyone had a great time. In June we had 2 fairs, one in front of First Union Bank on 421, and the other at Belk. Three pets were adopted at each fair. Special thanks go to Kathy Sebastian, who helped at the first fair. She stopped by early to pick up a poodle mix that was badly in need of grooming. A few hours later she brought Elaine back - beautifully groomed. Thanks to Kathy, Elaine was one of the lucky ones adopted that day. The adoption fairs would not be possible without the help of our dedicated volunteers. We are hoping to have 2 fairs every month, so we need even more volunteers. People who enjoy meeting new people and talking about animals should consider joining us at the fairs. July fairs are tentatively scheduled for the 13th and the 27th. If you would like to help us in any way contact Arlene at adoption@ humanesocietyofwilkes.org. If you are not sure how you can help, come and observe and ask questions. You will be surprised at the many ways you can assist. Fund Raising CommitteeThe judges have done their job and the 2003 calendar pictures have been selected. Thanks to the members of the Watauga Humane Society we have really super winners for next year’s calendar. Winners will be notified by mail, so we won’t give anything away here. Everyone will be pleased with the judges’ selections; they truly are great. Now we need to get all the ads sold so that the calendar can be taken to the printer. If you have a pet you want to praise, or have lost a pet you want to memorialize, you can purchase a $25.00 ad to go on either side at the top of a calendar page. Or you might like to purchase a $50.00 ad to go on the bottom of a calendar page. Just contact Margery, Ginger and Mitzi at fundraising@ humanesocietyofwilkes.org and let them know how you want your ad to look. Payment for ads should be mailed to Humane Society of Wilkes, P. O. Box 306, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659. Plans are moving right along for our 2002 Apple Festival booth. Two wooden ladders have been donated for display purposes. We will have a “paint and plan” meeting in either August or September (maybe both) to put the finishing touches on our display. Sandy Hall’s mother has begun making quilted casserole totes that we will sell at the festival. She made the quilt that was raffled off last year, and does beautiful work. Sandy will have some at the picnic for us to look at and perhaps pre-order. We will also have the doorstops we sold last year, T-shirts, and of course calendars. Our next meetings will be held on July 18 and August 15, at 6:30 PM at the Elks Club. All those who are interested in assisting us in fund raising are welcome at these meetings. The Association for Pet Loss and BereavementHave you ever lost a beloved companion animal? Or do you know someone who has, and could use some expert guidance? The Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement (APLB) is a compassionate non-profit organization dedicated to helping people during this very special kind of bereavement. Check out all they can offer at their web site www.aplb.org Acony BellHearing the name Acony Bell may cause some to think of a little white flower that blooms in early spring. But this Acony Bell is a little white dog. One of our adoption committee volunteers found this sweet dog in the middle of a busy intersection, one morning in early spring. She was shaking with fear. One lick on the face was all it took for this little dog to be rescued. Acony Bell is a small Lab mix (around 28 pounds), no more than a year old. Some who have seen her believe she may be part Eskimo Spitz. She is house trained, crate trained, up to date on her vaccines and has been spayed. She is looking for a home to call her own, where she can stay in a house, safe and away from busy intersections. For more information, or to see her, contact Tammy at dreamaker@wilkes.net |
A Prayer for AnimalsThanks to Margery Edgerton for submitting this moving prayer, taken from Dr. Sife’s book The Loss of a Pet.
Spay/NeuterOur spay neuter program was put on hold temporarily while we awaited a renewal of our grant from the D J and T Foundation. That grant has been approved and we will be issuing vouchers again this month. Kind NewsWe will again be providing Kind News subscriptions to Wilkes County classrooms for the coming school year.
