Fund Raising News

We are typing and proofreading the Humane Society of Wilkes Cookbook – a time consuming process that is making the proofreaders hungry! If you want to reserve copies in advance, just contact us at Fundraising@ humanesocietyofwilkes.org.

The deadline for entries for the Best Friends photo contest is May 31. So don’t put it off any longer! Don’t we all think our pets are “Calendar Girls or Boys”? Send your photos, plus $5.00 entry fee per photo, to Humane Society of Wilkes, P. O. Box 306, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659. Photos must be horizontal and in color. If you would like your photo returned, enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

The fund raising committee has decided to try to make our Apple Festival booth more attention getting. Among the things we would like to do is jazz up our display using portable, lightweight wooden stepladders. If you have one of these you can spare, or know someone who does, we would appreciate the donations. There will probably be other items to go on our “wish list” but for now it is just ladders. Watch this space. When it is time to put it all together we will put out a call for extra hands. In the meantime, we meet every third Thursday, 6:30 PM, at the Elk’s Club in North Wilkesboro. New members and new input are always welcome.

  • Adoption Committee

With the warmer weather upon us, the adoption committee has been busy preparing for adoption fairs to be held at varying locations in the community.

The first adoption fair was held last month in front of Belk. The manager, Watson Moore, agreed to let us put up a tent and bring dogs and cats from Wilkes County Animal Control that were available for adoption. Three puppies were adopted during that fair; this is about average for our adoption fairs. Mr. Moore received positive responses from his customers about our being there, and has invited us to return and hold another fair in the future.

The adoption fairs would not be possible without the help of our dedicated volunteers. We always need volunteers to help wash dogs, and transport dogs and cats to and from the fair. People who enjoy meeting new people and talking about animals should consider joining us at the fairs. If you are not sure how you can help, consider attending one of our fairs and just observe and ask questions. You will be surprised at the ways in which you can assist. In talking with us, you may think of an idea, service or activity to contribute. The next fair has not been scheduled yet but if you would like to be included in some way, please contact Arlene McGrane at Adoption@humanesocietyofwilkes.org.

  • KIND News

We will again be supplying KIND News subscriptions to every kindergarten, first and second grade classroom in Wilkes County in the 2002-2003 school year. This is the fifth year that we have sponsored this project as a means of educating children about showing kindness and compassion toward other creatures.

KIND News is a publication of the National Association for Humane and Environmental Education. It is a newspaper for students in elementary school that highlights the importance of treating people, animals and the environment with kindness and respect. The newspaper features articles, puzzles, and projects that introduce students to humane issues. It is written in a simple, lively style that appeals to children.

Each KIND News subscription provides teachers with 32 copies of KIND News and a teaching guide each month of the school year, September through May. Teachers also receive worksheets and posters to use in the classroom. The newsletters are taken home by the students, and are often shared with their families.

The cost of this program is $25.00 per classroom. This breaks down to $ .78 per child for the entire school year. We have ordered subscriptions for 114 classrooms next year. If you would like to sponsor a classroom or two, please send your donation to Humane Society of Wilkes, P. O. Box 1144, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659. We appreciate your support of this worthwhile project.
