2003 Calendars Are Here...And they are even better than our previous calendars! The price is still a bargain at $10.00, so make sure you get yours before they are sold out. Calendars will be available at the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival on October 5, or they can be purchased at the following locations: Animal Hospital, Curtis Bridge Road; Wilkes Veterinary Hospital, Second Street; Blue Ridge Bedrooms, 268 East; Eckerd Drugs, West D Street, and Elaine Hair Designs, 419 E. Main St., North Wilkesboro. Dog Park NewsDr. Steve Jackson and Shirin Scotten presented the dog park proposal to the Wilkesboro Town Board this week. The board instructed the town manager to contact other municipalities to get information about management, problems, etc. and the proposal was tabled. Spay/Neuter ProgramWe recently received another grant from the DJ and T Foundation to support our spay/neuter program. This program helps to pay for spaying and neutering for Wilkes County pets. The pet owner fills out and submits a form requesting assistance. Vouchers are issued to pay for part of the pet’s surgery. Vouchers are good for 30 days, and may only be used for spaying or neutering, not other veterinary services. Vouchers are for amounts ranging from $10.00 to $50.00; the amount is dependant upon the owner’s income, and the sex and species of the pet. To date this year, we have helped to pay for part of the cost of sterilization for 28 male cats, 43 female cats, 15 male dogs, and 41 female dogs. Voucher request forms are available at local veterinary offices and at adoption fairs. They can also be obtained by calling 838-9588 and leaving a message, or write to Humane Society of Wilkes, P. O. Box 306, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659. Adoption Committee UpdateSince the beginning of the year, the adoption committee has assisted Wilkes County Animal Control in placing 56 dogs and 12 cats. Most of these adoptions occurred at adoption fairs. A few were purebred animals that we were able to place with rescue organizations. We are very proud of our record of adoptions this summer. Adoption fair locations and adoptions were as follows:
We have been busy! The adoption fairs would not be possible without the help of our dedicated volunteers. And we need more volunteers in order to carry out our plan of having 2 fairs each month, one at Lowe’s and the second at varying locations. We need people who are willing to wash puppies before the fair, people who can transport animals, and people who can set up and transport the supplies. If you enjoy meeting new people and talking about animals you should consider joining us at a fair. The next fair is scheduled for October 12 at Wal-Mart. If you would like to help, contact Arlene at adoption@humanesocietyofwilkes.org. If you are not sure how you can help, come to a fair, observe and ask questions. You might be surprised at the many ways you can help. All the adoption fairs are announced on our web page (www.humanesocietyofwilkes.org), along with a weekly update of animals that are available for adoption at Wilkes County Animal Control. |
