About the Humane Society of Wilkes
Mission Statement
The Humane Society of Wilkes is an independent, 501(c)(3), volunteer organization dedicated to reducing the number of homeless, unwanted, and neglected companion animals in Wilkes County, NC. We support pet owners and prospective owners with programs that promote adoption and spay/neuter and services that provide information and resources to the community.
The Humane Society of Wilkes also works closely with Wilkes County Animal Services and local veterinarians to help prevent suffering and improve the quality of life for animals in Wilkes County.
About the Humane Society of Wilkes
The Humane Society of Wilkes was founded in 1996.
The Humane Society of Wilkes does not have its own animal shelter. Our volunteers work closely with the personnel at the Wilkes County Animal Shelter to help get as many pets as possible adopted. We also have a number of foster homes that provide a safe haven for pets, until they can find their forever home.
One of our major goals is to build our own no-kill shelter and we are currently in the planning stages and fundraising to make this a reality.
The Wilkes County Animal Shelter is located at 408 Call St., Wilkesboro, NC. Their number is 336-903-7688 and their hours are 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM Monday – Friday and 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM on Saturday.

Spay-Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP)
The Humane Society of Wilkes has a spay/neuter assistance program to help residents of Wilkes County. We can issue a “voucher” to eligible Wilkes County residents for a reduced cost spay or neuter of your pet(s) at two local veterinary hospitals. Vouchers are available for both cats and dogs that will be about 6 months or older at the time of surgery.
HSOW New Shelter Project
Wilkes County North Carolina is one of the largest counties in the state. The county animal shelter, which was built in 1996, is too small to handle all of the unwanted animals for this area. The Humane Society of Wilkes is in the process of planning and raising money in the hopes of building a HSOW animal shelter. This new shelter will allow us to save thousands of cats and dogs every year. Every dollar counts and no donation is too small.
